"*Productivity*" - to produce. to create something.
[[Deep Work - Cal Newport]] argues (rightly) that pushing emails and the day-to-day reactive and responsive work that takes our time away from deep work is labelled a 'productivity' but it is not.
As we encourage everyone to embrace "everyday assistants" (with AI) - these new automations are designed to support and help these more repetitive and connectivity based actions - the ultimate benefit being *Productivity.*
But are we looking at this as "great, I can do my emails and meeting notes and project plans faster - therefore I am productive" ? - if so, then all we have succeed in doing is make the shallow work a bit easier.
So - will the space and time saved by such automation be filled with more emails etc OR - will we be able to look at the equation and say "the productivity benefit has not been realised until we then go on to actually produce something (of value) in the time we have"
#insight we are not yet augmenting and unlocking the right kinds of productivity.
