Since May, I’ve been on a bit of knowledge drive. While you might tag it 'transformational' - the journey doesn't measure up like that day-to-day. It’s not marked by massive leaps or overnight success, but by small, consistent gains. The kind of progress you don’t always notice until you look back and realise just how far you’ve come.
I’ll admit, it feels a bit silly to only now truly grasp the value of lifelong learning. It's not like I have been shy to learning all my life until now, I had just neglected it until recently. But here’s the thing: it doesn’t matter when you start—what matters is that you _start_.
What sparked this change wasn’t a book or a course, but a random combination of events: the darker side affect of living with my injuries - avoiding being motionless (sleeping) too long, and an explosion of curiosity and excitement experimenting with generative AI technologies. Those early mornings of 'creative discovery' that become the catalyst for change, and I’m so glad I leaned into it.
As part of this journey, I’ve been diving into books that inspire, challenge, and expand my perspective. Here’s my 2024 reading list and what I've most benefited from:
1. The 5am Club *- get up and move first thing in the morning*
2. The Diary of a CEO - *filling up your buckets in the right order: working on your inner-self first*
3. Atomic Habits - *systems thinking, enjoying the habits will get you to the goal*
4. Essentialism - *learning to say no to things that don't contribute to your progress*
5. Future Proof - *the unique human value that will compliment machine work*
6. Start with Why - *discovering what drives me and why I do what I do*
7. Deep Work - *time blocking focused periods to produce great work*
But let me be honest: I’m not following everything I read to the letter. Instead, I’m experimenting, adapting, and building a system that works for me—one that’s realistic and sustainable - that let's me enjoy every day.
I'm looking forward to reading these next titles already on my shelf:
1. Meditations - *is Stoicism something I would like to learn more about?*
2. Originals - *what can I learn from analysing other high performers?*
3. Rewire your Mind - *what new techniques can I learn about the science and spirit of the brain?*
What’s been on your reading list this year you can recommend to me? Have you read any of these, and which bits did you like most?
